Alright so since I'm on vacation from work and on spring break! (Planned that one out really great!) I thought I'd breakdown each idol on their performance.
Alright let's get the party started:
Chihaya: The most powerful voice of 765Pro girls. While Chihaya has a fantastic voice that can belt out the majority of the songs produced, she does have her limits. Her voice is not necessarily suited for cutesy songs (Visionary, Start→ Star→, and Ohayou!! Asagohan). She ends up sounding more staccato when trying to perform cute, doesn't sound really that cute at all, or ends up singing too softly like she's singing 'my song' (looking at you Start→ Star→). She's better as backup for the cutesy songs. Really her voice is made for singing ballads. She can also sound a bit monotone at times and a bit emotionless, even if it does sound powerful, or it sounds like she's straining her voice to hit the notes. Along with Azusa and the Futami twins she has great vibrato, especially showcased in Yakusoku and Kosmos, Cosmos. Overall Chihaya is a stable idol that can be used in almost any song, you can almost always guarantee a great performance out of her.
Takane: The second most powerful voice in 765Pro, Takane brings the elegance that Chihaya lacks. One thing Takane lacks is vibrato, which is odd but hey she can't have it all. Takane is a lot more versatile in her singing than Chihaya. Honestly I prefer using Takane as a cute idol. She's just so fucking adorable! XD She's excellent at both cute songs and serious songs (Ippai Ippai, 99 Nights, 9:02pm, Do-Dai). And on top of her oddness she can rap, something not expected out of someone so elegant (Honey Heartbeat). The only complaint I have is how...I guess whiny her voice can get with some notes (Tonari ni...). Also she can get very stuffy sounding (DREAM) though it does work in some songs (Machiuke Prince). Once again another idol you can easily use as either the lead or backup.
Azusa: Has the power (Tonari ni...) but chooses not to use it. Azusa fits herself into the role of a cute idol, most likely to appear and sound younger than what she is. But she is still consistent with her voice and sounds great with many songs. Sometimes she does overdo the cuteness (Koi Kokoro) or sings entirely too soft (DREAM - come on I know you can sing deeper than that). Despite her softness and her 'reluctance' to use her power, Azusa is still a great pick for any song. Her vibrato rivals that of Chihaya's, hers being much more softer than Chihaya's. Though Azusa tends to over use her vibrato when singing. Her voice mixes well with the other idols, just make sure not to pair her with the twins simultaneously or else you'll lose Azusa's voice in the process.
Hibiki: The forgotten powerhouse of 765Pro (Overmaster). Where to begin with Hibiki. Her voice has terrific range and sounds good with most of the songs released so far. Her version of Tonari ni... is perhaps even better than Azusa's and is my personal favorite. Then there's DREAM, another fantastic song for her. Hibiki stays in tune far more often than Miki and has better control over her voice. Though sometimes her accent is her undoing (GO MY WAY!!, Honey Heartbeat, and Destiny aren't necessarily her best). There's just something off; her voice just doesn't suit the songs at all. Though she can pull off being a back up if needed for those songs. Besides her hidden power, Hibiki is also great for the more cutesy songs (Kiramekirari - for some reason her accent gives it a bit of an interesting kick - and Visionary). Hibiki is personally my favorite behind Chihaya and Takane. Her voice just blends great with others. That and her solo song is so far my favorite, the M@STER version is just so lively and fun to listen to (Pon De Beach).
Mami/Ami: Oh my little twins of doom that STILL have the same voice track for EVERY song, come on Namco! Anyway these two have a lot of potential in the future. Whether we ever see the idols age or not you can only imagine what the twins may sound like as older, more seasoned performers. Their vibrato has the potential to surpass both Chihaya and Azusa (Watashi-tachi wa Zutto... Deshou?, Aoi Tori, and Little Match Girl - but heard more so in their M@STER version of songs). But the two are a mixed bag. Take their Tonari ni... as an example. They sound great the first half but once they hit the chorus all hell breaks loose. D: But then they go and sing 9:02pm and Fate of the World like it's nobody's business (despite mispronouncing 'tears' as 'tea'). Then comes our next topic, they rush through the songs and end up mispronouncing or slurring the lyrics. Though for songs like Kiramekirari, Meisou Minds, and Kosmos, Cosmos it sounds fantastic. I need a M@STER version of these two with Kosmos, Cosmos right now! The twins are more suited for fast-paced, energetic songs (Honey Heartbeart and Do-Dai). But sometimes they just try too hard to sound serious and end up sounding not so great at some parts (I Want, Overmaster, and looking over to Tonari ni... again). Use wisely and with caution and not always together...they echo like they're singing in a cave. I prefer Mami over Ami due to the hairstyle.
Yukiho: I am hardly a Yukiho fan but I can't deny that she has a pretty decent voice. But thank god she got a new voice actress so she's not as overly cutesy, whiny, and whispery anymore. Still she's very soft and her voice isn't ideal for a lot of songs as the lead. She is primarily a backup singer for a lot of songs. Though she can hold her own (Overmaster - one of the best versions, I Want - the whispery-ness actually works for the song - and Little Match Girl). Then at times she's too soft and whispery and it just doesn't work with the song (my song, edeN, and Marionette no Kokoro). Like Ami and Mami, use with caution as her voice can be easily lost if paired with the wrong idols and they end up out singing her.
Makoto: Need a deep voice? Then Makoto is your girl for the job. Outside of singing deep vocals, Makoto is limited in her range. Not particularly good at softening her voice but does pull it off a few times (Futari no Kioku and Furufuru Future☆). She's absolutely adorable when trying to sing cutely (Kiramekirari, Nanairo Button, and Start→ Star→). Though her deep voice works for some songs (9:02pm, Agent Yoru o Yuku, and Fate of the World). When used with the right song Makoto is a great performer; she's just very limited with her options at times.
Miki: The lesser version of Hibiki and the fusion of Takane and Hibiki since they didn't make the final cut for the first iDOLM@STER game for the 360. Miki is well Miki. If she wants to sing seriously she will but that does not mean she will sing in tune at all. A lot of the time she ends up sounding like nails on the chalkboard (Tonari ni... - which is worse than the twins - and SMOKY THRILL - where she sings flat throughout). Then boom she goes and sings Little Match Girl and relations. Her voice sounds good with some songs but she's very inconsistent with staying in tune. Her power is really dampened by her lack of control.
Ritsuko: Very much the same as Miki but worse. She goes out of tune a lot and stays out of tune for the majority of the song. Or it just sounds like she's yelling and not singing. There are only a select few songs I would actually lead her in (Little Match Girl, Agent Yoru wo Yuku, Honey Heartbeat, and MEGARE!). I use her like Yukiho, mostly for backup. I rather use Yayoi as a lead before sticking Ritsuko in there to just scream the lyrics. I really don't see any other use for her. Ritsuko is stable for the backup positions. She's just not leader material in my eyes. There's only a handful of songs she's usable in as leader.
Iori: One of the highest and softest pitched voices in 765Pro; I consider her worse than the twins...I find them a lot more entertaining sounding I suppose. I honestly do not like using Iori too much unless she's partnered with deeper and stronger voices: e.g. Takane or Chihaya or I pair her up with Yukiho - they go really good together for some reason. To me she sounds very much like a Vocaloid doll. I find her trying to sound so cute plainly annoying. We already have Miki doing that whole thing already. Though not as bad as Yayoi, her voice still takes on a baby tone that isn't ideal for a lot of songs (relations and Agent Yoru o Yuku). I like it when she sings a bit deeper than normal (Overmaster and I Want). Her voice works for the softer songs and some others (my song - one of the best versions - and Kyun! Vampire Girl).
Yayoi: Cute, sweet little Yayoi we all love you but hate your voice most of the time. Yayoi is ideal for cute songs and cute songs only, even then her voice can barely hold a tune. Her personal/image song Kiramekirari is just a handful of songs she sounds decent in and also Positive!. But you can't fault her, she really tries her hardest to sing the serious songs and she's just so adorable when she does (Overmaster, Marionette no Kokoro, and I Want - though she's fantastic as back up in that song). I mean you have to feel bad for her; she tries to sing well so hard but her baby voice holds her back every time. The closest she got to sounding serious was 9:02pm but even then she sounds nasally. But I have to admit out of the lolli group (her, Iori, and Mami/Ami) her Tonari ni... isn't half bad especially compared to the Futami twins.
Haruka: Haruka...um well she's supposed to be the 'main' idol/character of the series but I don't find her all that special. Personally I would have classified Haruka as a Visual idol and Azusa as a Vocal idol but I'm not in charge here. I just find Haruka's vocals to be mediocre at best; they remind me of a terrible fandub. Her voice is extremely bland and a bit pitchy at times. The only songs I found I really like her in so far are: Suteki Happiness and Kyun! Vampire Girl. Her sounding blander than bland and pitchy (Me ga Au Toki and even her own personal song GO MY WAY!!). But somehow she is a really great rapper - better than the twins or Takane (Honey Heartbeat). I use Haruka as backup and even less as a leader than Yukiho, Yayoi, or Ritsuko. I just don't like Haruka all around. Her character is blah and her performance is just as blah.
